THE TOP AWARDS
1. Jamaica Broilers “Fair Play” Award – ELECTRONIC
AWARDEES: Nadine McLeod, Raymond Lawson, Ivan Shaw, Everton Thorpe, Glenford Campbell & Tamika Carter MEDIUM: TVJ ENTRY: “The Story of Romall Lewis: The 12-year-old Boy with Cerebral Palsy” (This entry was placed in 1st position by three of the five judges. This is the second Fair Play Top Award which has gone to TVJ – the first being the inaugural Electronic Award for 2000/2001)
SOME JUDGES’ COMMENTS: “A well-told story, that is well written and photographed…which evokes a heartfelt response from the viewer”, said one. Another said: “It is a wonderful story, well followed from inception to a joyous end!” “What’s not to like! The story has all the elements: disabled child, community involvement, sports and victory over bureaucracy and adverse circumstances”, was the view of a third judge. “A good follow-up and treatment,” said yet another. “An example of the media serving a good purpose in the community,” was the final comment. AWARD: $250,000.00 and a Trophy [PRESENTER: Mr. Christopher Levy, President & CEO, Jamaica Broilers Group (JBG)]

AWARDEE: Tyrone Reid & Mark Beckford [NB: This is his 3rd time that Tyrone has won the top PRINT Award over the 11 years of the Fair Play Awards] MEDIUM: The Gleaner ENTRY: “Jamaica’s Shame: the Golden Age Story”
SOME JUDGES’COMMENTS: “This a good example of journalistic reporting that resulted in some action being taken,” said one judge. Another said: “The dogged reporting, evident in the series, draws in the reader without resorting to sensationalism. And the immediate reaction of officialdom made this a winner.” “Top notch investigative reporting. Full marks!” said a third judge. “The article is clearly written and the topic emotive; generating strong public and government responses,” was the view of another judge. The final judge’s comment was: “A good investigation”. AWARD: $150,000.00 and a Trophy [PRESENTER: Mr. Robert Levy, Chairman, Jamaica Broilers Group (JBG)]

SOME JUDGES’COMMENTS: “A very detailed report, with some gruesome details,” said one judge. “One of the biggest stories of 2011,” said another. “Excellently written: Insufficient balance….” said a third judge. “An excellent investigative series generating high public interest beyond the borders of Jamaica,” was the view of another judge. The final comment was: “A tabloid story; graphic, but keeps you reading and stays with you long after you have put it down.” AWARD: $50,000.00 and a Certificate of Merit [PRESENTER: Dr. Claudette Cooke, Vice President – HRD & PR, JBG]

AWARDEES: Earl Moxam, Glenford Campbell & Coulston Anderson MEDIUM: TVJ ENTRY: “Framed”
SOME JUDGES’COMMENTS: “A well-produced report; very good investigative journalism. Well photographed and edited,” was the view of one judge. “An eye opener and told in an engaging manner,” said another judge. “Good story, with real outcomes,” was the third comment. “This is a well presented story of one woman’s endangerment from a false accusation of cocaine trafficking,” was the view of one judge. “Strong human interest story with a good protagonist,” was the comment by another judge. AWARD: $25,000.00 and a Certificate of Merit [PRESENTER: Dr. Claudette Cooke, Vice President – HRD & PR, JBG]

AWARDEE: Latoya Spence, Hopeton Henry, Robert Hylton & Archibald Gordon MEDIUM: TVJ ENTRY: “The Gheta Morgan Story”
SOME JUDGES’COMMENTS: ”A well done story that got good response for help”, said one judge. “Report captured with impact and sympathy to the dire circumstances of the woman and her children,” was another judge’s view. “Great reporting with very measurable and remarkable outcomes,” said a judge. “A very touching response and outcome to a depressing and shocking situation,” was another view. “Very remarkable and inspiring story,” said yet another judge. AWARD: Certificate of Commendation [PRESENTER: Dr. Claudette Cooke, Vice President – HRD & PR, JBG]

AWARDEE: Karyl Walker (This is the second award for Karyl in this year’s competition) MEDIUM: Jamaica Observer ENTRY: “Men with a Message”
SOME JUDGES’COMMENTS: ”The writing might be a little excessive, but it still manages to capture and maintain interest,” said one judge. “It is a socially important piece of journalism,” was the view of another judge. “Excellent work, well written and good focus,” said one judge. “A well written series of articles….but had limited investigation work and relied mostly on the informant and social worker,” said another judge. “Good idea for a series…I was let down by some of the copy editing,” was the final comment.
