PROFILE of JAMAICA BROILERS GROUP FAIR PLAY AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
As part of the Jamaica Broilers Group’s renewal of the Fair Play Awards Programme, the company decided to introduce its new Fair Play Award of Excellence in 2013 as one overall award for the most outstanding work published or broadcast across all media platforms.
The overall winner will get a Trophy and a cash prize of $300,000.00.
The main purpose of the Fair Play Awards programme - which was introduced in 2000 - is to encourage journalists to be thorough and balanced in investigating and reporting on issues of national importance.
Jamaica Broilers initiated the annual Awards – as well as the biennial Excellence in Media Lecture series – in recognition of the powerful and influential role that the media plays in forging public opinion and responses; also, to reward those who best exemplify the fairness and balance with which they must carry out that important responsibility.
Only one award was offered initially – this for work done in 2000/2001. However, over the previous years the number and value of the awards had increased overall.
“The Jamaica Broilers Fair Play Award programme provides incentives for local journalists to improve their investigative and reporting skills … to intensify their commitment to their profession of journalism … and, in achieving excellence, to become a possible last line of defense between justice and exploitation, honesty and double talk, myopia and the visionary world view!” - Alma Mock Yen, Former Chief Judge
